Twenty-five chapters documenting the slow-motion collapse of both kingdoms. ELISHA succeeds ELIJAH with a double portion and a string of miracles. The northern kingdom cycles through assassinations and coups — nineteen kings, not one of them faithful — until Assyria executes the final extraction in 722 BC. The south lasts longer thanks to periodic reformers like HEZEKIAH and JOSIAH, but the trajectory is terminal. JOSIAH finds the lost Book of the Law in a temple renovation — the nation had literally misplaced God's word. Babylon arrives in 586 BC, burns the temple, and hauls Judah into exile. Every warning Moses gave in Deuteronomy lands exactly as advertised.

2 Kings 2:11 — 'Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.' The operative never files a death report — extracted directly. Malachi 4:5 promises his return before the Day of the LORD. Jesus IDs John the Baptist as the Elijah figure (Matthew 11:14), and Elijah himself appears at the Transfiguration. The agent who ascended was pointing to the One who would descend.
