BOOK DOSSIER: SONG OF SOLOMON
Testament: OT | Chapters: 8 | Status: 0% DECLASSIFIED
Eight chapters of love poetry between SOLOMON and his BRIDE — the most controversial book in the canon and the one most preachers avoid. The language is explicit, intimate, and unapologetically physical. It reads like intercepted communications between two people who are consumed with each other. The church has historically read it on two levels: a celebration of covenant marriage as God designed it, and a typological portrait of Christ's love for His people. Both readings are legitimate — the literal grounds the typological. This is the only book in the Bible where desire is the point.
Scarlet Thread
Song of Solomon 2:16 — 'My beloved is mine, and I am his.' The mutual-possession language maps to the covenant formula: 'I will be their God, and they shall be my people' (Jeremiah 31:33). Ephesians 5:25-32 declassifies the whole operation — marriage itself was a type pointing to Christ and the church. The intercepted love letter was never just about Solomon.
